The Loom Of Fate begins in Banjo's hometown, an average suburban city in northern California. This page helps you learn more about some of the places Banjo and Desmond visit after traveling back to the Viking Age by providing links to a few of the many web sites about these locations.

Iceland

An island nation in the north Atlantic, settled by Vikings in 874, about 100 years before the time described in this story.

Birka

A small market town on in island in Lake Mälaren, Sweden, established in the middle of the 8th century and abandoned about 200 years later.

Hedeby

An important Danish port during the Viking Age, Hedeby is now located on Germany's northern border.

Volund's Cave

Volund's cave is based on Ballova, a cave where iron was worked in the Thidrekssaga. This cave is thought by some to be a cave in Balve, Germany. To get there, Banjo and Desmond travel with Ketil's Vikings down the Rhine river to the Duna, a small tributary just north of present-day Cologne, Germany. They go northeast up the Duna, then travel on land to Ballova.

Asgard

The home of the gods in Norse mythology.

Niflheim

The cold, misty world of the dead. Home of Hel, queen of the damned.

Jotunheim

The kingdom of the giants, far to the north of the middle-earth home of men.
